14 FINISHING UP

As we finish up with our work from this class, we should take a moment to reflect on the new tools and techniques we have picked up, and how they have and will continue to affect our creative work, our stories we need to tell and the experiences we wish to share. We have moved through the areas of basic animated forms to character design to digital compositing, but what’s more important is that we now can do these things with more precision, clarity and confidence. It is time to remind you that a tool is just that – it really is more about YOU. YOU have the vision, YOU have the stories and YOU can make beautiful things come to life.

SESSION INSIGHT

Justin Cone at Motionographer.com does a really great job at curating the world’s best creative content in the motion design realm. If a serious designer doesn’t have their ear to the ground with this resource, then they’re missing out on some of the greatest inspiration and insight out there. This breakdown with Elastic on their work with the MTV Video Music Awards for 2014 provides a good look into their process and creative mind.

With a pretty steady introduction to the techniques and creative applications of motion design through this semester, students should be poised to step into deeper and more elaborate work with their own work. This might include personal work with video blogging, or documentary work, maybe some support in the non-profit sector or work with local filmmakers. Some might even be ready to start some dialogue with potential clients in the commercial sector. These opportunities are there, but we still encourage you to push your skills and broaden your experience with these tools and techniques. At this point you have established the basics necessary to understand the animation process, kinetic type, video work and compositing, but there is so much more to learn in this area, and much more refinement to be absorbed.

Final Words
As I mentioned before, the world of 2D Motion Graphics is an amazing one. It’s creatively satisfying and can be quite lucrative for those who put in the work. I want to leave you with the most important points one last time:

1. Don’t just watch tutorials, practice practice practice
2. Use only the best work as examples to aspire to
3. Be patient

Good luck, and have fun!
